J.P. Morgan philanthropy review, 2008-2009

J.P. Morgan reportIn 2010, J.P. Morgan's philanthropy team in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) commissioned NPC to analyse its 2008 and 2009 grant portfolio. We reviewed all 35 grants that were funded and completed in this time, looking at their impact on the communities involved. We also held in-depth interviews to develop detailed case studies of six of the grantees.

Our analysis found that:

  • Through its 2008–2009 grants programme, J.P. Morgan improved the lives of more than 34,000 people in six regions of Europe and Africa.
  • In direct response to the socio-economic climate, the main focus in 2008–2009 was on community development, which accounted for 56% of the funds distributed.
  • After J.P. Morgan’s funding came to an end, 78% of the projects it supported have been sustained, with the help of other grant-makers, statutory support or internal funding.

As part of our research for J.P. Morgan, we also surveyed the grantees, finding that:

  • All respondents believed that J.P. Morgan’s grant had a positive effect on their organisation.
  • 93% felt that their relationship with J.P. Morgan was as good as or better than their relationship with other funders.

As well as producing the report, we made recommendations to the J.P. Morgan philanthropy team concerning their funding processes, to inform their future grant-making.

‘J.P. Morgan has opened up new opportunities, new partnerships, and allowed us to speak to new organisations that otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to. Without J.P. Morgan, [Young Enterprise South West] would undoubtedly still have been two or three years behind where we currently are.’
