An introduction to theory of change

Wednesday 25 April or Wednesday 27 June
10am-4.30pm
New Philanthropy Capital, 185 Park Street, London SE1 9BL

What is a theory of change?

Want to ensure that your charity is delivering the right activities to meet your charitable aims? Want to develop a measurable effective model of activities? Want to demonstrate to your funders how your activities are making a difference?

Developing a theory of change can help you do all these things. A theory of change takes your charity's desired final outcome and works backwards to understand all the steps involved in achieving that outcome—showing how all the organisation's day-to-day activities come together to help the charity achieve its mission. Theory of change is often the first step in planning a new programme or thinking about evaluation.

You can find out more about NPC's work to help organisations develop a theory of change on our blog.

'The theory of change process has transformed the way we plan and measure our impact at SolarAid. It offers a practical and realistic method of mapping out the change you are looking to bring about, helps identify any potential issues and provides a clear road map for all staff, donors and investors.'

Katie Bliss, Programmes Manager at SolarAid

How will NPC's workshop help your charity?

If you have heard about theory of change and are interested in using it, but not sure what it involves, this workshop is for you. The event will discuss the ideas behind the model and participants will have the opportunity to put the theory into practice by developing a theory of change. With no more than 16 participants the workshop will be interactive and hands-on, allowing participants to take practical next steps back with them to their charities.

By the end of the workshop participants should be able to:

  • Determine how theory of change can help their organisation
  • Identify the constituent parts of a theory of change
  • Use techniques to construct their own theory of change.

Who should attend?

Learning about theory of change is particularly relevant for senior staff who are involved in setting an organisation's strategy, and all staff who are involved in monitoring and evaluation.

Can I book several places?
