Reviewing and developing strategy

NPC helps grant-making trusts and foundations to review and improve their funding strategies, providing them with the best available information to guide their decisions.

We work with staff and trustees to gather information about what has worked well in the past, and we research potential needs that the grant-maker could address in the future. We help clients with:

• Reviewing activities and achievements, assessing the impact of funding programmes to determine the success of the strategy and lessons that can be learnt. We typically analyse grants information, interview or survey grantees, interview grant-making staff, and, if appropriate, interview independent experts.

• Assessing potential for impact, identifying and researching possible focus areas for funding programmes and working out the impact a foundation could have in each area.

• Facilitating decision-making processes, structuring and facilitating conversations among trustees or senior staff to consider available information, share views and make decisions about future funding.

 

Helping a foundation to identify needs

A large foundation, which helps disadvantaged children in the UK, wanted to allocate part of its budget to a preventative programme that would tackle the causes of these children’s problems.
